Directorate of Materials

The Directorate of Materials provides airworthiness coverage for ab-initio development of materials, the backbone of aviation industry through its regional centres of military airworthiness (RCMA) located at Hyderabad & Bengaluru. This directorate is also responsible for ab-initio design & development of air armament stores through its regional centres of military airworthiness (RCMA) located at Pune. Materials are broadly classified into metallic alloys, polymers, ceramics, composites and Airborne consumables (FOL, paints, etc.). The directorate undertakes & executes the certification & airworthiness coverage besides issuing guidelines & formulating procedure for certification of materials & air armaments.

Regional Centre of Military Airworthiness (Air Armaments) located at Pune.  It is responsible for airworthiness certification of indigenously developed air armament stores viz. aircraft bombs (guided and unguided), rockets, fuzes, gun ammunitions, missile subsystems (warhead and propulsion system) and explosive devices of airborne equipment's. Further, to meet the growing requirements of armed forces, it is also responsible for clearance of flight-testing of imported air armaments for evaluation besides life extension of existing air armament stores.

Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (F&F-FOL) located at Bengaluru is specialized in certification of wrought alloys, castings & forgings, shape memory alloys, MMC friction brake pads, rubber compounds & PTFE, stealth materials, Additive Manufacturing, carbon fiber (Glass Fabric & Sealants), FOL (Defence Aviation Fuel, lubricating oils & Greases), paints & surface coatings to cater the requirements of Indian Armed Forces.
