The thrust areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for indigenous naval systems need to be evolved along with the supporting technologies and consequently, participation of academia in this endeavor for a faster turnaround is considered an imperative. Appreciating this fact, NSTL has taken an initiative to organize a one-day meet named NSTL Academia Meet: NAM - 2019 with participation from various educational institutions and a few relevant DRDO laboratories at NSTL on 19th January 2019 as a part of the on-going celebration of the Golden Jubilee Year.
The aims of the meet were: (1) to understand what the academia could offer to NSTL in its pursuit of AI and other related fields and also (2) to appraise the academic participants the scope for academic collaborations related to various technological domains in addition to AI for naval systems that require enhancement on equal scale for incorporation of AI in them so that the emergent naval systems become progressively less reliant on human support.
A total of 45 academicians took part in the meet. In his opening address, Dr. O.R. Nandagopan, Outstanding Scientist & Director, NSTL stressed the need for fundamental research that the academic needs to undertake which should eventually get translated into the applied domains of activities of NSTL. Prof. G.Nageswara Rao, Vice Chancellor, Andhra University, and the Chief Guest of the event expressed similar views in his address as that of the Director. Distinguished Scientist Dr. Samir V. Kamath, DG (NS&M), in his address emphasized on the emerging necessities of AI and the importance of such DRDO Academic interactions for mutual benefits. Dr. Anil Agarwal, Director (ER&IPR) delivered the keynote address. The participants from the academia presented briefly the outline of the various ongoing research activities in their respective institutions. The participants expressed satisfaction for the opportunity that this meet offered them to interface with NSTL to understand the on-going and emerging needs for various technologies which would enable them to chalk out the possible areas for collaboration with DRDO.
