Historical Background

Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) was established in 1961 under the aegis of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The laboratory has successfully carried out research and development in the area of EW technologies and systems, covering communication and radar frequency bands. DLRL has designed, developed and productionised a large number of state-of-the-art components, subsystems, systems and integrated EW systems. DLRL has successfully developed a family of air-borne, ship-borne, ground and submarine-based electronic intelligence (ELINT), communications intelligence (COMINT) as well as radar and communication jamming systems. The laboratory also has to its credit, successful realization of communication and radar EW payloads for aerostat, UAVs and satellites.

The testing and evaluation of complex EW systems require huge infrastructure test and evaluation facilities. To cater to this requirement a second campus named Electronic Systems Engineering Centre (ELSEC) was established in the year 1998 as an extension to DLRL. Spread over 200 acres, this centre consists of state-of-the-art infrastructure to meet the critical integration and evaluation requirements of ongoing and future programmes. Modern EW system simulation and modelling facilities are created at ELSEC for simulating complex EW systems and threat environment scenarios. The R&D effort made by DLRL in the design and development of various EW systems has resulted in production and induction of a large number of system/integrated systems into Services.
