In 1959, Defence Research Laboratory started in the barracks of the erstwhile British Military hospital at Landaur Cantt, Mussoorie. Engaged in radio wave propagation studies, food preservation and packaging, the study of problems at high altitudes. In 1962, Propagation Field Research Station (PFRS), as a field station of DLRL was established in Hyderabad. In 1965, PFRS became an independent entity as Himalayan Radio Propagation Unit (HRPU) to set up communication links in the border areas and provide frequency prediction services using data collected from propagation studies. HRPU also collected ionospheric data from its field stations at Jammu and Tejpur. In 1968, HRPU was moved to Dehradun and temporarily located in the old barracks of IRDE. In 1976, Established in the present location and renamed as Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL).
