Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) was established in October 1986. Its research focus was initially in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Cognition and Control Systems. In November 2000, R&D Groups of Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) working in the areas of Command Control Communication and Intelligence (C3I) systems, Communication and Networking, and Communication Secrecy were merged with CAIR. With this merger, CAIR became a premier laboratory for R&D in the areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as applicable to Defence. CAIR also caters to users from other departments of Government of India. Well known academic institutions like IISc, IITs etc. have been co-opted for doing research in technology areas of interest to laboratory. CAIR which was operating from different campus across Bangalore until 2006, is now located in a single verdant 15 acre modern campus. The four major buildings namely, Administration Block, Secure Systems Block, Technology Block and Systems Block, house the technical and administrative activities. Today, CAIR boasts of an organizational strength of over 349 personnel including over 188 well qualified scientists.
