Introduction: Glanders is highly contagious disease of horses, monkeys and mules. It is caused by Burkholderia mallei, a gram negative bacterium. The disease is notifiable to the World Organization of Animal Health (OIE). Complement fixation test (CFT) is a favoured serological diagnostic test; however, false negative and positive results have been reported. More importantly, the CFT test reagent is not easily available commercially and test is labour intensive.
Intended Use: The assay is intended for serodiagnosis of glanders from equines samples.
The Test Assay: The test system is an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and utilizes a novel recombinant protein antigen. Antibodies against this protein are produced in infected horses and can be used for diagnosis of glanders. The antigen being specific for B. mallei does not cross react with serum samples from a related human disease melioidosis caused by B. pseudomallei.
