Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) is the only establishment of its kind in DRDO to provide cutting edge terrain intelligent solutions to the Armed Forces. DGRE has its headquarters at Chandigarh and is a new establishment formed with merger of two premier DRDO labs viz. Snow & Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) Chandigarh and Defence Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL) Delhi. DGRE K under the administrative control of Armament & Combat Engineering Cluster of DRDO and has been raised on 15 Nov 2020.
DGRE has 05 Research & Development Centres (RDCs) one each at Manali (Himachal Pradesh), Delhi, Tejpur (Assam), Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh) and Lachung (Sikkim). It also has 03 Mountain Meteorological Centres (MMCs) at Srinagar (J&K), Auli (Uttrakhand) and Sasoma in Ladakh U.T.
The vision of the new establishment DGRE is "To be a leader in the development of critical technologies for enhancing combat effectiveness with a focus on terrain & avalanches". The role and charter of the establishment is mapping, forecasting, monitoring, control and mitigation of landslides and avalanches in Indian Himalayas.
Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) has a mandate to ensure safe mobility of troops in inhospitable terrains and also to focus on military potential of various types of terrains based on modern techniques of terrain evaluation.
