Balvir Kumar, Scientist 'G' has been appointed as Director, Directorate of IT & Cyber Security (DIT&CS), DRDO, HQrs on 09 Feb 2024.
Balvir Kumar, Scientist ‘G’ assumed charge as Director, DIT&CS with effect from 12 Feb 2024.He joined TBRL, Chandigarh as Scientist B on 24 March 2000. He obtained B. Tech in Computer Sc. & Engineering from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, Punjab in 1999 and M. Tech in Computer Sc. & Engineering from IIT, Madras, Chennai in year 2010. He was promoted to Scientist G on July 20, 2023.
He was one of the founder members of the Embedded Systems Division (ESD), which was setup in year 2004 for pioneering the design & development of the on-board intelligent subsystems for the functional safety & security of the warheads. During his tenure at TBRL he has made significant contributions in the area of research for conception, design, development, testing, validation, production, integration & operationalization of computer-based mission critical on-board subsystems. He gained rich experience in the area of design & development hardware & software for embedded systems for the mission critical systems.
He also led the Communication & IT (C&IT) group for successful establishment of Campus Wide Area Network & Office Automation Solution in TBRL. An office automation solution consisting of several modules for automation of various Administrative, HR, Finance & Budget and Technical business processes was established under his guidance. He supervised the team to design & develop a web-based Trial Data Repository System (DRS) and subsequently an Integrated Trial Management System for effective planning & utilization of test facilities. He has also worked as an Information Security Officer (ISO) of TBRL wherein he took several key initiatives and successfully guided the IT security team to implement the DRDO’s Information Security Policy Guidelines and Directives leading to raising the information security posture of Lab.
For his notable technical contributions, he was awarded with DRDO Young Scientist Award in Year 2013, Lab Level Technology Group Award in Year 2005 and number of other appreciation certificates/awards.
