Fused Silica Radar Domes by Cold Isostatic Pressing & Sintering Technology

Fused Silica Radar Domes by Cold Isostatic Pressing & Sintering Technology

Silica Radar Dome (Radome) is a critical component of target seeking Missile as it protects the navigation system of the missile from adverse environment. Slip/Gel casting methods are generally adopted for fabrication of silica Radomes, but the component rejection rate is very high due to several technical reasons. DMRL has developed Radome technology indigenously in view of its strategic nature and long term application.

Salient Features of Technology Developed at DMRL

  • DMRL has carried out innovation driven R&D and established an Indigenous technology based on cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and sintering route for manufacture of silica Radomes.
  • The CIP processed Radomes have shown excellent EM performance.
  • During the structural load testing, the CIPed Radomes could withstand 240 % and 400 % of the required load at room temperature and at elevated temperature, respectively.
  • The CIP + sintered Radomes also passed through the lightening and vibration tests.

CIP

The Radomes are required in large numbers to fulfil the current and future requirements of missile applications.
