Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has approved Ladakhi cow as India’s 42nd cattle breed, for which ‘Breed Registration Certificate’ was received by Dr. O.P. Chaurasia, Director and Dr. Vijay K. Bharti, Sc ‘D’ of DIHAR from Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare during a ceremony held for awarding breed registration certificates on 12 Dec 2018 at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

‘Ladakhi Cow’, is a native cattle of Leh-Ladakh, J&K, India for which phenotypic, physio-biochemical, and molecular characterisation of the cattle was conducted by DIHAR (DRDO), ICAR-NBAGR, and Animal Husbandry Dept., Leh which revealed superior milk quality (A2 milk), high calcium, phosphorus, and fat content, disease resistance, milk productivity on low input system, and adaptability to extreme cold and hypoxia.
