Achievements

Since its inception the laboratory has developed and established a number of frontline technologies in the area of metallurgy and material science. These are categorised as follows:

Armour and Ammunition

  • Steel and Tungsten heavy alloy FSAPDS (leading to establishment of HAPP at Tiruchirapally)
  • Kanchan armour for MBT
  • Jackal steel armour for armoured vehicles and personnel protection
  • Light weight armour for airborne vehicles

Aerospace

  • Brake pads for Aircrafts
  • Nickel based superalloys for aeroengine applications
  • Super plastically formed air bottles for aerospace applications
  • High stiffness light weight Aluminium-Lithium alloys and high strength aluminium alloys
  • Thermal barrier coatings
  • Investment casting technology for modern turbojet aerofoil castings
  • Investment cast components for jet fuel starter (JFS) of LCA “Tejas”
