Development of Bullet Proof Jacket
DMSRDE, Kanpur being the nonmetallic material lab and has developed personal protection systems like bulletproof jacket, ballistic helmet, boot anti mine infantry and blast protection suit etc for defence and other security forces. DRDO is already in the process of designing indigenious Bullet Proof Jacket under project sanctioned (Mission mode :01 year), Code: DRM 555; Cost 300 lakhs; PDC: sep 2015 as per the Indian Army latest GSQR 1438. Although DMSRDE DRDO worked on different GSQRs (1293, 1318, 1413) issued by Indain Army from 2009 onwards and able to meet the compliances for the same.
The following achievements made w.r.t. current GSQR – 1438 are :
- DMSRDE, DRDO is working on development of medium size Bullet Proof Jacket.
- The Soft Armor Panel and Hard Armor Panel except for front torso has been completely designed and developmed successfully as per the testing conditions mentioned in GSQRs.
- DMSRDE is putting the effort to meet the ballistic compliance of front HAP where very near success has been achieved.
- All the ballistictesting of Bullet Proof Jacket is being done at TBRL Chandigarh which is the nodal laboratory of testing the Bullet Proof Jackets and other personal protection system.
- The equivalent efforts are being made to develop the small and large sizes Bullet Proof Jackets.

Individual Protective Equipment for NBC
In project development of advance textile & polymeric material for NBC individual protective equipment under program “NBC” Defence technologies phase-I, the following prototype items were developed and are under comparative evaluation.
Flex Water Bottle Plastic With Cover
Water bottle plastic with cover currently used by the services to keep the potable water during exercise in the field area. It is made of HDPE food grade quality. During its use unpleasant odour was felt by the troops when potable water was stored in these bottles. Cracks were also developed during use. To obviate these problems a new Flex Water Bottle Plastic with Cover has been developed by using food grade polycarbonate material which is stronger, higher impact resistant and light weight with one liter capacity.
Salient Features
- Used by troops for carrying potable water during exercise/operations.
- 100% UV resistant, Capacity 1 litre and withstands -400C to 110 0C.
- Materials Involved: Food grade Polycarbonate having high impact strength.
- Keeps water in original temperature condition upto 6 hours
Current Status
- ToT of the store given to 5 firms in 2015 generated Rs. 5.5 Lakhs revenue as TOT fees.
- DGOS raised an indent for Quantity 225000 Nos. of the store costing approx. Rs. 4.5 Crores.
Tin Mess Aluminium Alloy
Based on the user’s requirement of storing, heating and eating three different kind of meals on individual troop basis the stores has been developed.
Salient Features
- Used for carrying and taking meals and beverages by troops.
- Made up of high strength food grade aluminium alloy sheet.
- Consists of outer and inner bodies with insulated handles and separate detachable katori. It is convenient to take three
- different type of meals
Current Status
DGOS raised an indent for Quantity 1,69,441 Nos. of the store costing approx. Rs. 3.0 crores. Inspection and QC in process
Water Container Aluminium Alloy
LED developed the store based on the user’s requirement of storing and transporting the potable water in high altitude regions. The potable water can be collected and 20 Litre capacity Water containers can be stored and can be transshipped manually on man-pack basis.
Salient Features
- Used by troops for carriage on man-pack basis and storage of potable water in high altitude regions.
- Made up of high strength food grade aluminium alloy sheet.
- Suitable for melting frozen water by heating directly on fire.
Current Status
COD, Kanpur raised an indent for Quantity 14000 Nos. of the store costing approx. Rs. 2.5 crores in 2015.
Telescopic Comouflage Pole
Army requires poles with sufficient strength and adjustable height for supporting the Camouflage Nets developed by DMSRDE. Collapsible telescopic pole which provides support to Synthetic Camouflage Net with adjustable height from 1 m to 3 m (length increment 25 cm) has been designed and developed.
Salient Features
- Disrupts the geometry and contour of the Army Vehicles or objects
- Designed for high speed wind load by using high strength Al-alloy tubing having high flexural and impact strength.
- Service temperature -500 C to 500 C.
- Height is adjustable and can be fixed in that position.
- Store was designed and 300 Nos. of prototypes were developed.
- Initial User trails conducted in 4 Army Commands.
- Users suggested some minor modifications which have been incorporated in the design and manufacturing of prototypes for final trial is in progress.
Closed Cell Form for High Temperature Applications
Ceramic (SiC) foam offers a unique combination of properties such as low density, high specific surface area and high stiffness to weight ratio, high specific strength, high thermal shock resistance and low thermal & electrical conductivity.
Common Areas of Application
- Thermal insulators for furnaces and aerospace applications
- Refractory linings
- Acoustic application
- Support for grinding materials
- Filters for hot gases and molten metals
- Heat exchangers and heat pipes
- Separation membranes
Capability of DMSRDE, Kanpur
- Fabricated different porosity grade SiC foam (porosity range 50 % - 95 %)
- Open or closed cell SiC foam of different shapes (flat plates, cylinder, sphere, cuboids etc.)
- Flat plate of size upto 200X200X20 mm or as per the users requirement
Composite Panels Based on F-CNTS
Composite panels based on f-CNTs, glass fiber etc. have been fabricated and tested at NSTL for Advanced Torpedo Propulsion Motor Development. Initial trials are encouraging and based on the demand raised by NSTL (letter No NSTL/2801/TD/EED dated 15th Oct.,2013),composite panels having desired dimensions and desired thickness (as suggested by NSTL) have been fabricated and sent to NSTL for trials. Initial trials passed.
Compact Protected Memory Module (CPMM) for Aircraft Sold State Flight Data Recorder
The Compact Protected Memory Module (CPMM) for aircraft Solid State Flight Data Recorders is a memory module capable of recording aircraft parameters and audio into solid state non-volatile memory. The recording is protected against stipulated crash conditions to enable its subsequent retrieval and decoding by Ground Replay Equipment. The CPMM consists of two parts namely Body Assembly/Housing and Memory Module (MM). The housing consists of Co-axial Cylinders shells filled with insulating composite materials and providing central cavity for fitment of stack of solid state memory board / module, hence keeping the memory board to survive during hostile environments.
