Aluminium Foams

Aluminium Foams

Aluminium foams are ultra lightweight materials (hence greater weight saving) which can be used to absorb impact, vibration and blast energy efficiently. DMRL has successfully established laboratory scale technology for the production of closed cell aluminium foams. Foams with density varying from 0.3-0.9 g/cc (i.e. having density less than water) have been produced in cylindrical (up to 220 mm diameter), plate (30-50 mm thick) and other complex shapes. DMRL foams, evaluated at other laboratories, have shown promise for applications requiring blast protection, impact absorption and drop impact protection. Typical applications include crash resistant structures (for defence and civilian automobile bumpers, engine mounting brackets, A-pillars), blast resistant anti mining boots, bunkers, jackets, tank under-belly protection and composite armour.
