Outstanding Scientist and Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE)

Dr. S.V. Ramana Murty, Outstanding Scientist has taken over as Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) on 1st Feb 2023.

He obtained his B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from JNTU, Kakinada, M. Tech in I.C. Engines and Gas Turbines from REC, Warangal and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from VTU, Belagavi. Prior to joining GTRE, he has undergone a 1-year Fellowship Course on Gas Turbine Technology from Institute of Armament Technology, Pune currently known as Defence Institute of Advanced Technology.

Before getting elevated to the current position, he led the turbine group of GTRE as its Technology Director. He has over 30 years of rich experience in the aero-thermal design, detailed configuration, manufacturing and testing of axial and radial inflow turbines for aero, marine and land applications.

He played a pivotal role with Indian industry / DPSU / DRDO labs / CSIR / Foreign industries as the industry interface for manufacturing critical components of turbine and for developing the relevant advanced technologies and processes.

He interacted with abroad agencies like Safran Aircraft Engines & Malichaud from France, Sukhoi Design Bureau, CIAM, GFRI, NPO Saturn from Russia, Centrax, AETC, Howmet, Cranfield University from UK, Betshmesh Engines Limited, Israel and Formetal, Belgium towards performing various techno-managerial assignments relevant to design, development and realization of turbine modules, their components as well as the overall engine. He also visited most of these agencies.

He was instrumental in developing design, analysis tools & methodologies and generating experimental database through elemental tests pertinent to turbines in collaboration with academia and R&D organisations under various avenues / programmes of DRDO like GATET, GTMAP, CoPT, AR&DB Panels etc.,

He closely interacted with various foreign engine houses for the technical audits, co-design & development of advanced 98 kN & 110 kN thrust class engines and import of engines for various ongoing as well as futuristic programmes of DRDO.

He led a team of scientists and prepared the Long-Term Technology Perspective Plan & Vision Document 2050 for military aero gas turbine engines and the GTRE product roadmap. As member of various review committees, he has contributed immensely in several air breathing propulsion / gas turbine engine projects of national importance being pursued by HAL, NAL, DARE & NSTL.

He has more than 35 publications in National/ International Seminars, Symposia and Journals. He delivered several keynote / invited talks as well as chaired a few sessions at various R&D institutions, academia, industries and conferences. He is also a recipient of DRDO technology day award.

He is a member of several National / International Bodies like American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India, Institute of Engineers and Society of Aerospace Quality & Reliability.
