A virus obliterating conveyor for the disinfection of baggage has been developed by Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, a Kochi based laboratory of DRDO in partnership with Apollo Microsystems (AMS) Limited, Hyderabad. This is an automated stand-alone system that uses UV baths for sanitization and is able to disinfect the baggage within seconds. Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Secretary DD R&D & Chairman DRDO released the product on 26th June 2020 in an online function. Dr. Reddy congratulated NPOL scientists and AMS engineers for being able to take the product from concept to realization within a short frame of just 2 months. He also exhorted NPOL and AMS to establish standards for the product so that it could be exported worldwide, besides meeting the requirements within the country. Dr. Samir V Kamat - DG, Naval Systems, DRDO, Shri. S. Vijayan Pillai - Director, NPOL, Shri. Sameer Abdul Azeez - Project Director, NPOL also spoke at the event.

The disinfector is based on a roller based conveyor carriage system that carries the baggage through a chamber equipped with accurately calibrated and optimally placed UVC sources. The sensing mechanism of the system automatically detects the entry of bags and powers on the UV illumination. The system has been specifically designed to irradiate the body of the luggage in all directions and disinfects the entire surface of the baggage at the required intensity levels and exposure time. It also has inbuilt safety features for ensuring the prevention of any direct UV exposure outside the chamber. This baggage disinfector can be easily installed at airports, railway stations, metro stations, bus stations and institutional gates.
