Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) is a new combat vehicle developed by DRDO as per the requirements of Army proposed to be fielded by the troops for combat situations. The vehicle structure is built using a steel armour plate with an add‐on light weight composite armour for providing all round protection to the vehicle.
A specific ceramic material embedded in rubber matrix was chosen, shaped, contoured and processed on a component level through a novel encapsulation route. Ceramic manufacturing, armour panel fabrication through specific polymerization encapsulation technique, water jet cutting as well as novel coatings have been developed and established at industrial scale. The solution developed by DMRL meets all the specified requirements and has undergone evaluation trials.
The first prototype vehicle with add‐on armour developed by DMRL has undergone user for Indian Army. This technology can be extended for any other armoured vehicles in use by the police forces, MHA, VIPs and civil security forces.
