FORJ & Tether for Aerostat

The Fibre Optic Tether is an electro-optic-mechanical load bearing cable with optical fibres which play the following roles in an Aerostat system:

• Anchoring the Aerostat at desired altitude through ground winching system.
• Electrical power supply to airborne electronics.
• Two-way data communication.
• Low resistance path to ground for Lightning current.

Small diameter, high strength Aerostat tethers that minimize weight and drag are the design driver. The deployment and application conditions of tethers determine the details of conductor, insulation, and strength member design.
