Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) organized Science Day Celebrations on 28 Feb 2019 in a befitting manner.
National Science Day is being celebrated to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by the great Indian Physicist Bharat Ratna Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman. He discovered the Non Elastic Scattering of Photons in Liquid Medium and announced it on Feb 28, 1928. He was the first ever Asian to be honored with Nobel Prize in physics for this work in 1930. This effect is used to study the materials by chemists and physicists.
Eminent oceanographer Dr RR Rao, Former Scientist, NPOL was the Chief Guest for the Science Day Celebrations at NSTL. He delivered the National Science Day Talk, detailing the effects of climate change and global warming and how to reduce the carbon foot prints.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. O R Nandagopan, Outstanding Scientist and Director NSTL recalled the exemplary research of Sir CV Raman, and stressed upon the need for focused approach to realize the benefits of scientific research for the development of Defence Technologies. Shri V.Selvaganesan, Scientist ‘F’ & Additional Director was the Chairman of the Science Day Celebrations Committee.
As part of the National Science Day Celebrations 2019 various competitions were conducted for students, painting competitions of class-VI to class-VII and Essay competitions for class-VII to class-X were conducted. For college students Essay competitions were conducted about 20 schools and 25 colleges in and around Vizag participated in the competitions.
Smt M.Vijaya, Scientist 'F' was awarded Silicon Medal for her outstanding contributions by Director, NSTL. She has presented her work on "Physics of a Ship’s Wake" highlighting the physics of formation of wake and its identification based on the acoustic echo characteristics for wake homing for torpedoes.
The Celebrations concluded with the distribution of prizes to the children who won various competitions conducted on the occasion of National Science Day 2019. Senior Scientists, Officers and staff of NSTL present during the celebrations.
