Computation Fluid Dynamics

AR&DB has set up its first Center of Excellence in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as its hub center and IIT, Kanpur and IIT Mumbai as its associate centers.

The major aim of establishing the center of excellence at IISC, Bangalore is to bring the CFD community together and generate the required synergy for development of this emerging technology to its fullest capability in the country and to conduct research / develop appropriate codes. IISC, Bangalore is the other institution from which the aerospace technology has branched out in the country and has the requisite leadership to attract other experts and young bright people. Visiting faculty, associate faculty and visiting scientist programs will be a major feature of this center besides conduct of seminar / short courses.

AR&DB has setup its second Center of Excellence in Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering at IIT, Mumbai.

Systems engineering has come to an essential function for the success of major projects, which rely heavily on integration of specialised technology from different streams into a single product. During last decade there has been a phenomenal growth of design & development activity in the Indian Aerospace Arena. AR&DB clearly felt need for the application of knowledge and formal methodology of Systems Design and Engineering (SDE) in the aerospace design and development industry as well as production of the same in the country.

Aim of the Center of Excellence in Aerospace Systems Design and Engineering is to create awareness about Systems Design & Engineering in relevant organisation and subsequently motivate professionals to adopt formal SDE practices. It would finally train a new breed of engineers who can implement SDE formally in the concerned organisations. Aerospace Engineering Department of IIT, Mumbai being a vibrant body which has a strong base in sub-system analysis and synthesis for aerospace applications, a strong System & Control interdisciplinary group working on systems modeling, simulation & control, and a reliability engineering group working on subjects such as risk analysis etc., was chosen as the hub center for this activity.

Composite Structure Technology

AR&DB has sanctioned its third Center of Excellence for Composite Structures and Smart Applications at NAL, Bangalore as its hub center and IISC, Bangalore, IIT, Kanpur and IIT, Kharagpur as its associate centers.

AR&DB Structures Panel has been supporting a large number of institutions for activities concerning design & verification of composite structures, characterisation of composite materials and technique for defect analysis, life evaluation etc. Based on the survey, specialisation and strength has been developed in the area of fabrication and analysis at NAL, Bangalore, NDT and analysis at IISC, Bangalore, NDT and computational methods at IIT, Kanpur and environmental effects at IIT, Kharagpur. Based on the above background, AR&DB felt that Center of Excellence for Composite Structures and Smart Applications be created around NAL / IISC, Bangalore, IIT, Kanpur and IIT, Kharagpur.
