ULTRA LOW DENSITY ALUMINIUM-BASED CLOSED CELL FOAMS

    Cast aluminium foams demonstrate an interesting combination of properties including ultra low density, high structural stiffness per unit mass, high capacity for energy absorption compared to polymer foams, and high fire retardation capability.

     DRDO has designed and developed a set up to produce aluminium foams. Foam samples of approximately 90 mm dia and up to 450 mm length have been produced. The cell structure across the section is uniform. The relative density of foam is low. Compression tests to evaluate properties like 'yield strength', Young's modulus and energy absorption were carried out on 80 mm dia specimens. The properties of the foams are comparable to those of a Japanese commercial product 'Alporas'.
