The Field Research Laboratory (FRL), Leh, organised 9th Ladakhi Kisan-Jawan Vigyan Col Attrey briefing about trench cultivation to the visitors
Mela during 11-12 August 2001. This Mela is organised every year to create awareness about modern agro-animal technologies developed by FRL to local farmers and troops. Shri Thupstan Chhewang, Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, inaugurated the Mela. Col DP Attrey, Director, FRL, welcomed the guests and highlighted achievements of FRL. Dr Brahma Singh; Director of Life Sciences, DRDO HQrs, New Delhi, presided over the function. Various R&D agencies, like Sher-e-Kashmir Agricultural University; Amchi Research Centre, Leh; State Departments of Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, various NGOs and army units participated. A number of distinguished guests from DRDO HQ, State Department, HQrs 14 Corps, 3 Inf Div, 8 Mtn Div, senior citizens and other civilian dignitaries graced the occasion. About 22,000 farmers, troops, NGOs, government officials and students from different parts of Ladakh visited the Mela.

The main attractions included: twelve varieties of cucurbits and five new varieties of vegetables, apricot and seabuckthorn products, lilium and gladiolus cultivation, solar greenhouses, local medicinal plants, poultry and dairy production units, etc. Various competitions for tree plantation, flower gARDEns, fruit basket, cucurbits, potted flowers, flower arrangements, etc. were organized for the farmers and Army units. A cultural programme was also organised as a part of the celebrations: Maj Gen SV Thapliyal , GOC, 3 Inf Div, the chief guest for the closing ceremony, give away the prizes to the winners .
