Shri M Natarajan has taken over as the Scientific Adviser to
Raksha Mantri, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and DG
R&D w.e.f. 31 August 2004 from Dr VK Aatre on his superannuation.
Shri Natarajan joined DRDO in 1970 at Combat Vehicles Research & Development
Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, and has worked over the years on several important
programmes/assignments relating to the design and development of combat
vehicles. He has been associated with MBT Arjun programme since its inception
and was appointed Programme Director in 1987. Later, he took over as Director,
CVRDE, Avadi, in December 1989. He was appointed Distinguished Scientist in
March 1999 and served as Chief Controller (ACE) at DRDO HQrs from January 2001
to August 2004.
The continued hard work and innovative design approach and dedication of the
scientists and the technicians of CVRDE under the leadership of Shri Natarajan
resulted in India's first indigenous state-of-the-art Main
Battle Tank Arjun. As Chief Controller he was in-charge
Armaments, Combat Vehicles and Engineering group of laboratories and was
instrumental in the acceptance and subsequent induction of several of the
products in the Services.
Shri Natarajan was awARDEd Padam Shree in 2003 for his distinguished services to
the Organisation. He is also the recipient of Best Scientist Award in 1994; Best
System Laboratory (CVRDE) Rolling Silicon Trophy in 1995; National Design Award
by the Institution of Engineers (India) in 1996; and Technology Leadership Award
Shri M Natarajan is a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from lIT, Madras and MTech
in Mechanical Engineering from lIT, Mumbai. He did Masters of Science in
Military Vehicles Technology from the RMCS, UK in 1975. He is the Distinguished
Alumni of IIT, Chennai; Fellow of National Academy of Engineering; and Member,
Society of Automobile Engineers and Fluid Power Society of India.
