MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Continuing Education Programme

IAT, Pune

Under the continuing education programme   (PEP) of DRDO, the Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, organised a course on Energetic Polymers from 30 July to 3 August 2001. The course was conducted by the Faculty of Explosives and Applied Chemistry.

Prof GS Mani, Director & Dean, IAT inaugurated the course. Twenty-five participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: synthesis, characterisation and applications of energetic polymers (like polyvinyl nitrate, polyglycidyl nitrate, glycidyl azide polymer, polyazidomethyl methyl oxetane, polybisazidomethyl methyl oxetane, polynitromethyl methyloxetane, and their co-polymers); N-N bonded polymers and fluoropolymers. Besides, methods of large-scale productions and applications of nitrocellulose as energetic polymer, advanced techniques such as electron spectroscopy for
chemical analysis (ESCA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and conventional methods of   analysis and characterisation of polymers, such as: molecular weight measurements, thermal and spectral analysis, gel permeation, chromatography, etc. were also covered during the course. Application of these energetic polymers in composite and composite-modified double-base (CMDB) propellants, LOVA propellants, fuel-rich propellants for integrated ram rocket (IRR) and in plastic bonded explosives were also part of the course curriculum. Dr SG Kulkarni, Sci E and Dr NG Navale, Sci D, were the course DIRECTOR and course coordinator, respectively.

lAT organised another course on Advances in Missile Propulsion during 20- 25 August 2001. The course was conducted by the Faculty of Guided Missiles. Prof GS Mani, Director & Dean, IAT inaugurated the course. Thirty-four participants from various DRDO llabs/estts and students from DY Patil College attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: latest trends in propellants, solid and liquid rocket systems, ramjet, scramjet and gas turbine propulsion systems, computational fluid dynamics, non-destructive testing,. visco-elastic  structural analysis, gun propulsion and flight instrumentation and safety. Prof GC Pant, Sci F and  Dr V Ramanujachari, Sci F, were the course DIRECTOR and course coordinator, respectively.

ITM, Mussoorie

The Institute of Technology Management (ITM), Mussoorie, organised a course on Software   Project Management during 2- 7 July 2001. The objective of the course was to acquaint the participants with the critical issues in software project management.

Shri Sivaraman; Sci G, Jt Director, Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, inaugurated the course. Eleven participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: issues in software project management, project monitoring and control, software quality assurance, software project planning, software metrics, software configuration management, capability maturity model, and software documentation.

Shri S Haldar, Sci G, presided over the valedictory function and distributed course certificates to the participants. Smt Anita Mohindra, Sci C, was the course DIRECTOR .

ITM organised another course on Programme Management from 27 August to 7 September 2001. The course aimed at training the middle level scientists in programmme management and highlighting the emerging concepts and techniques. Shri JAR Krishna Moorty, Director, IRDE, Dehradun, delivered the inaugural address and highlighted the importance and necessity of effective management of programmes. Twenty-two participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. Eminent professionals from mega programmes of DRDO viz. Sarvatra, IGMDP, LCA, Samyukta and Kaveri, deliberated and discussed the experiences gained and issues related to programme management. Brig (Dr) RC Pathak, Director, ITM, delivered the valedictory address.
