The Field Research Laboratory (FRL), Leh, has developed a multivitamin herbal beverage frl1.jpg (294188 bytes)named Multivit from fruits of Seabuckthorn (Hippophae sp), which is found growing wild in various parts of Ladakh, Lahaul-Spiti, Sikkim, and Uttaranchal. The beverage is a rich source of vitamin A, B, C, E & K. During the trials conducted in L sector including Siachen brigade the beverage has been rated as an excellent drink by the troops facing extremely low temperature as the beverage does not freeze even upto -22oC.

Various products made from Seabuckthorn being releasedA patent for preparation of herbal beverage from Seabuckthorn has been filed in the name of Dr Sanjai K Dwivedi, Col DP Attrey, Dr OP Chaurasia, Shri Basant Ballabh and Dr Brahma Singh, through DRDO HQrs.This technology has also been transferred to a Delhi based company for commercial manufacture of the product; which has already started in Leh. Sauce and jam are the other two products made from Seabuckthorn. The products were launched by Lt Gen Arjun Ray, VSM, GOC, 14 Corps; Shri Thupstan Chhewang CEC, LAHDC and Shri Sudhir Kumar, MD, SFABC, in a function held at FRL, Leh, on 30 August 2001.
