Shri A Subhananda Rao, Sci G, has been appointed Director, High Energy Materials
Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune w.e.f. 1 April 2004. He obtained BTech in
Mechanical Engineering from NIT, Warangal in 1973; and ME from IISc, Bangalore
in 1975. Shri Rao joined DRDO at Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL),
Hyderabad in 1975. He was promoted to Sci G w.e.f July 1998 and worked as
Director, Solid Propulsion Systems Centre at Advanced System Laboratory (ASL),
Hyderabad prior to joining HEMRL as Director.
Shri Rao has rich experience in the field of propulsion system of various
classes of missiles. He has made excellent contributions in the development of
propulsion systems for Agni, Trishul, Nag programmes of DRDO. Propulsion system
for Lakshya (Booster), SAM-II and SAM-III have been other noteworthy
contributions of Shri Rao. A large number of technologies including case bonded
motors, large rocket motor system, flex nozzle control system, gas generation
system for canister launched missile and fabrication technology for ultra high
strength steels are to his credit.
He is the recipient of Gold Medal for Import Substitution of Propellant for
surface-to-air missile SAM-II and Distinguished Alumni Award-2001 (NIT Warangal).
He is member of Institution of Engineers; Aeronautical Society of India;
Governing Council of High Energy Materials Society of India; ISAMPE; and
Astronautical Society of India.
Dr Haridwar Singh, Outstanding Scientist, Director, HEMRL retired from service
w.e.f. 31st March 2004. He joined HEMRL as JSO in 1971 and was appointed
Director HEMRL w.e.f. June 1990. The Spectrum of DRDO and other awards bestowed
on him and Scientist of the Year Award conferred twice (1983 & 1993) speak
volumes of his exemplary contributions in the area of high energy materials. He
has been appointed Emeritus Scientist w.e.f. 1 April 2004.
Shri PU Deshpande, Distinguished Scientist, Ex-CC R&D; Ex-Director, Armament
Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, expired after a short illness
on 20 March 2004. He served DRDO for 35 years in various capacities and was the
pioneer of Fin Stabilized Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FSAPDS) Ammunition
Technology in India. He was member of many policy-making bodies of DRDO and
Ministry of Defence. He was a visionary and his contribution to DRDO is
unmatched. He retired from service in July 2003.
