Dr Kaushal K Srivastava has been appointed Director Biomedical & Allied Sciences (DBAS) at DRDO HQrs, New Delhi, wef 1 October 1999. He was Director (Projects) at the Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS), New Delhi, and had been heading the Department of Biochemistry since 1984.
Dr Srivastava obtained his MSc (Biochemistry) from University of Lucknow in 1960 and PhD in Biochemistry from Vallabh Bhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Delhi. He also obtained Masters Diploma in Public Administration from Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. He has been associated with DRDO since 1963; and his research interests have been in the areas of alcoholic tolerance, environmental stress specially high terrestrial altitudes and use of adaptogens in the management of stress. Based on his work, Indian Army has introduced composite Indian herbal preparations in cold and high altitude areas and also in the areas of anti-insurgency operations to alleviate stress-induced deterioration in physical and mental performance. Indian pharmaceutical industry has recognised his work on adaptogens. One of the preparations worked out by his group has been commercialised by Lupin Laboratory as One-Be.Dr Srivastava has published three monographs, several reviews and about 150 research papers and various reports in various national and international journals.
Dr Srivastava is life member of several international and national academic societies and Vice-President of Indian Academy of Neurosciences and Association of Clinical Biochemists of India. He is Fellow of Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists of India, Indian Academy of Neurosciences (IANS) and Fellow of Association of Clinical Biochemists of India. He is the recipient of MS Malhotra Research Award-1985 and 1995, Seth GSMedical College and KEM Hospital Oration Award ACBI 1995, Talented Scientists Award--1995 at 35th World Congress of Natural Medicine, Tirupati, DRDO Scientist of the Year Award, Life Sciences-1995 and Subhash Mukherjee Memorial Oration Award of Endocrine Society of India-1997. Recently, he has been elected Founder Executive Secretary, Indian National Academy of Stress Sciences.
Dr KL Chakraborti, Sci D, Head, Radiological Imaging, Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), Delhi, has been nominated Honorary Consultant in Imageology at Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, which is a WHO collaborating centre for cancer control programme in developing countries.
Dr OP Nijhawan, Director and Dr AK Gupta, Sci F, Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, were deputed to Singapore to attend the International Symposium on Photonics and Applications from 29 November to 3 December 1999. Dr Nijhawan presented a talk on Thermal Imaging Technology--The Indian Scene, while Dr Gupta presented a paper titled Laser-Based Sensor for Measuring Snow Drift Parameters.

ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION FOR ARDE
The Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, has been recommended for ISO 9001:1994 Certification by TUY Suddeutschland India, in December 1999. As a result of this exercise, ARDE has witnessed a gradual and controlled metamorphosis in the physical feature and renaissance in quality awareness.
