DRDO LABS/ESTTS OBSERVE NATlONAL SAFETY WEEK

The National Safety Week was observed with great enthusiasm by various DRDO labs/estts during March 2000. Some highlights of the celebration are:

ARDE, Pune

The Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, observed National Safety Week, during 4-11 March 2000. The week-long event began with the safety pledge taken by the employees. To inculcate safety awareness, safety day badges were distributed, safety banners were displayed and a competition on safety suggestions and safety slogans was organised. Shri YV Ghate, while welcoming the audience for National Safety Day celebration, informed about objectives of the National Safety Council in India. As a part of the event, Shri SV Kulkarni, TO ' A " spoke on common industrial accidents and their prevention, while Shri HA Kher, TO 'B' , delivered a note on some accidents involving ammunition and their causes, which are caused mainly due to negligence of safety norms. The winners of safety competitions were given cash prizes by the Director. Films on Fire Prevention and Control and Industrial Safety were screened as a part of the event.

IRDE, Dehradun

The Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) , Dehradun, observed the Safety Day on 6 March 2000. Dr DP Juyal, Offg Director, IRDE, inaugurated the Safety Day event and spoke on essentiality of safety in all aspects of life especially in the areas of workshop practice, laser application, processes using chemicals, etc. He also administered the oath of safety which was followed by a series of declamation by officers and staff on the themes of national safety and saf~ty in industrial environment: The occasion was observed by the distribution of safety badges to all the employees to inculcate the culture of safety in working.

HEMRL, Pune

The High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL ) , Pune, observed the National Safety Week by organising safety-related video film and guest lectures on safety in chemical and explosives industry and safety in the manufacture and handling of nitric esters. The Safety Rolling Trophy was given to the division which followed the best house-keeping and adherence to safety norms. Prizes were given away to the winners of the safety, health and environment awareness contest which was held to motivate personnel to gain knowledge about safety. Dr HS Yadav, Offg Director, HEMRL, released a Safety Bulletin on the occasion.

RCI, Hyderabad

The National Safety Day was observed at the Research Centre lmarat (RCI) , Hyderabad, on 21 March 2000. Shri ER Mahender, Dy Chief Inspector of Factories, Hyderabad, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, released a special safety bulletin and spoke on the importance of personal protective equipment. Shri KVSS Prasada Rao, Director, RCI, administered the safety pledge.
