CVRDE, Avadi
Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, organised a Course on Embedded Systems during 16-20 June 2003. Twenty-five participants from various labs/ estts attended the Course. Shri R J ayakumar , Addl Director, delivered the inaugural address while Shri R Shankar, Sci F delivered the valedictory address.

 PXE. Chandipur
Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Chandipur, organised a Course on Range Techniques in Evaluation of Armaments during 19-23 May 2003. Twenty-nine participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the Course. Topics like fundamentals of weapon systems, explosives and their compositions, range instrumentation, armour and its design, dynamic evaluation of armament stores were covered. Shri KK Chand, Sci C, was the Course Director .

Scientific Meetings/Conferences/Workshops

DARL, Pithoragarh

Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory (DARL), Pithoragarh, organised a Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights in the Life Sciences during 2-3 June 2003. Dr R Saha, Adviser DST & Director PFC (TIFAC), New Delhi chaired the session and highlighted some key issues of IPR in life sciences. Dr V Siddhartha, Outstanding Scientist and Adviser (ER&IPR), DRDO HQrs, New Delhi delivered a lecture on Understanding some Misunderstandings on the Role of Intellectual Property Rights in Technology Commercialisation.

 Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, organised the Valedictory Function of TSOC-28 (Army) and TSOC-ll (Air Force) on 18 , June 2003. Maj Gen RS Jambusarwalla,  GOC, 41 Arty Div, was the ChiefGuest. Sixty- : one Army officers and eight Air Force officers , passed the Course.

IAT, Pune, also organised the Valedictory Function for the Tank Technology Course-31  (TTC-3l) and Naval Technical Staff Course-23  (NTSC-23) on 4 June 2003. Vice Adm SCS , Bangara, A VSM, Commandant, NDA was the Chief Guest.

INMAS, Delhi
Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), Delhi, organised a Workshop on Detection and Prevention Strategies for Infectious Diseases for the Next  Decade on 21 June 2003.  All DIRECTORs of Life Sciences Laboratories of DRDO along with more than fifty delegates from various DRDO labs/estts and other institutes attended the Workshop. Dr RV Swamy CC R&D (MLS) inaugurated the Workshop. Dr W Selvamurthy, Adviser, Biomedical Sciences presided over the inaugural function. Maj Gen T Ravindranath welcomed the delegates while Dr RK Sharma, Organising Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. The Workshop  concluded with a panel discussion on evolving strategies for timely detection and prevention of infectious diseases.


Institute of Technology Management (ITM), Mussoorie, organised a Course on Right Mindset for Effective Project Management during 23-27 June 2003. Twenty-three participants from various DRDO labs/estts  attended this Course. Shri Narender Singh, Director, ITM, inaugurated the Course and delivered the keynote address.

ITM also organised a specialised Course on Strategic Policy Studies in collaboration with the University of Georgia during 9-13 June 2003. Twenty-three senior DRDO officers including a few DIRECTORs attend the Course. Dr Anupam Srivastava, Executive Director and Dr Seema Gehlot, Associate , Director both from the faculty of India Initiative and South Asia Programme, University of Georgia, USA constituted the faculty.

The Course DEALt with and elaborated upon geo-strategic issues and topics pertaining to multilateral export control regimes, nonproliferation trends, challenges, and opportunities. Shri RB Singh, Director, HRD, DRDO HQrs was present in the inaugural session. Dr VK Aatre, Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri participated in the proceedings on 13 June 2003 and also delivered the valedictory address.

NSTL, Visakhapatnam

 Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) , Visakhapatnam, organised a National Seminar on Underwater Systems and Engineering 2003 (USE- 2003) during 20-21 June 2003 at the newly inaugurated Auditorium Manasi. Vice Adm PC Bhasin, PVSM, AVSM,VSM, IN, Chief of Materials, Naval HQrs inaugurated the Seminar.

Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, Distinguished Scientist & CCR&D (MNS) delivered the keynote address entitled, Emerging Trends in Underwater Technologies. About 200 delegates from various research and academic, institutions, public and private sector industries attended the seminar.  About 45 papers , on different disciplines of underwater were , presented.

The Chief Guest of the validictory function Vice Adm Raman Puri, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, FOC-in-C, Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, emphasised the importance  of Naval R&D for strengthening the fighting  capability of the Indian Navy .

Raising/Foundation Day Celebrated

DEBEL, Bangalore

 Defence Bio-engineering and Electro-medical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bangalore celebrated its Foundation Day on 17 June 2003. AVM Ranjit Kumar, Principal Medical Officer, HQ Training Command, IAF was the Chief Guest. Shri GP Agrawal, Officiating Director, presided over the function. He gave away the Laboratory Scientist Award, Technology Group Award, Award for DRTC Cadre, and Award for Administrative and Allied Cadre. He also distributed Commendation Certificates for meritorious work to officers and Cash Awards to technical and ministerial staff of DEBEL.

DL, Jodhpur

Defence Laboratory (DL), Jodhpur celebrated 44th Laboratory Raising Day on 16 May 2003. Shri R K Syal, Director, presented Technical Laboratory Awards to DRDS scientists, DRTC employees, Administrative and Allied staff. Cash Awards were given to 17 employees. Winners of the sports events were also awARDEd.
