NATIONAL LASER SYMPOSIUM

President KR Narayanan inaugurating the National Laser Symposium

The Laser Science & Technology Centre (LASTEC), Delhi, organised the 9th National Laser Symposium (NLS) during 13-15 December 2000 at Metcalfe House, Delhi. The NLS 2000 was sponsored by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BARNS) of the Department of Atomic Energy and was organised by LASTEC in collaboration with Indian Laser Association (ILA).

The Symposium was inaugurated by Honourable President Shri KR Narayanan on 13 December 2000. He showed keen interest in the future of laser technology. Dr R Chidambaram, former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, also spoke on the occasion and inaugurated the exhibition of laser products. Dr DD Bhawalkar, Director, Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT), Indore, and Shri Amitav Mallik, Director, LASTEC, also spoke on the status of laser technology . The Symposium, spread over three days, was well attended by over 350 participants from the Government institutions, universities, IlTs and R&D organisations in the country . This national event was structured into eight technical sessions to cover 16 disciplines of lasers. These sessions included 22 invited talks by eminent personalities on laser science and technology. Nearly 175 research papers, including 22 invited talks and five thesis were presented in two poster sessions. A few selected PhD thesis presentations were also organised on the last day. Twenty-three industries exhibited the state-of-the-art products on laser technology at a specially organised exhibition.

The Symposium was very beneficial for LASTEC and DRDO as it provided nation-wide recognition to LASTEC as one of the major laser laboratory in the country. This will help LASTEC in widening Its cooperation with other laser groups in the universities and institutions of the country.
