DEBEL RECEIVES lSO-9001 CERTIFICATION
The Defence Bioengineering & Electromedical Laboratory [DEBEL], Bangalore, has become the first Bangalore-based DRDO laboratory to be awARDEd the prestigious ISO-900 1 certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards [BISl. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the then Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri, received the certificate from Shri VK Jain, Additional Director General, BIS and handed it over to Shri CGS Sarma, Director, DEBEL, on 16 October 1999.
Dr Abdul Kalam congratulated the DEBEL scientists and staff for their efforts in obtaining the quality certification. Speaking on the occasion, he stated that design is the most important factor contributing to quality in a product. He said that 60 per cent of the quality depends on proper design, 20 per cent on process engineering and the balance on technology transfer/absorption.
Shri CGS Sarma welcomed the distinguished gathering comprising the DIRECTORs of sister laboratories and other invitees. He said that getting ISO-9001 certification is only a beginning, and meticulously practising the system is essential to derive full benefit. In his address Shri Jain spoke that BIS has a long association with defence especially in the field of standardisation. Shri GP Agrawal, Joint Director, read a report on efforts put by DEBEL to obtain the Certificate.
