Greenhouse Cultivation of Tomatoes
The Defence Agricultural
Research Laboratory (DARL), Pithoragarh has successfully developed a technique for high production tomato cultivation
under protected conditions, in middle arid high altitudes. In this technique, the
indeterminate tomato hybrids have been tested round the year. Thirty-day old hybrid
seedlings are transplanted, and pruning of side branches is done for better growth. The
plants are stacked upto the height of 3-4 m with the help of jute ropes. The harvesting is
carried out after 70-75 days and continued for 3-4 months with an average of 15
harvestings. The yield per plant varies from 7 to 8 kg. A record yield of 23.18 kg/m2
(2318 q/ha) has been obtained from single crop using this cultivation technology.
