Continuing Education Programme

CVRDE, Avadi

Under the continuing education programme (CEP) of DRDO, the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, organised a course on AFV Trials and Logistics during 10-14 September 2001. Twenty-five participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: origin, role and development of AFVs, trials on automotive system, weapon system and reliability, maintainability and logistics, ergonomics, EMI & EMC and sensor instrumentation. Lt Gen Tej Paul, CCR&D (Resources), DRDO HQrs, delivered a lecture on Teramechanics on 12 September 2001. Dr D Hanumanna, Director, CVRDE, inaugurated the course while Shri JL Mohindroo, Sci F, CVRDE, delivered the valedictory address.

CVRDE organised an Introductory Course on CNC Machining and Programming during 17-21 September 2001. The course provided an overview of the latest CNC machining techniques besides covering programming and tooling. Twenty-three participants attended the course. Dr NS Nagarathinam, Associate Director, CVRDE, inaugurated the course while Shri SV Dhanraj, Addl Director, delivered the valedictory address.

CVRDE also organised a course on Technical Reporting using Computer Software during 24-28 September 2001. Twenty-five officers from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: painting and editing tools, imaging, photoshop software, frames, styles and templates, layers, graphic manipulation in page maker and editing, scientific and statistical functions, chart and annotation in MS excel software. Shri R Jayakumar, Addl Director, CVRDE, inaugurated the course and Shri BS Prakasa Rao, Sci F, CVRDE, delivered the valedictory address.

DIPR, Delhi

The Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), Delhi, organised a course on Dr Selvamurthy speaking during the inaugural sessionTraining for Trainers during 15-19 October 2001. The aim of the course was to update and refresh the instructors who handle various training programmes in DRDO establishments. The main areas covered during the course were: training-design, presentation skills, communication skills, modern training aids, evaluation system, interpersonal skills training, motivational aspects of training, and budgeting for training. Twenty-six participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. Theory as well as practical sessions,  including role-plays and group exercises, formed a part of the course. Smt Arunima Gupta, Sci D, was the Course Director.

DLRL, Hyderabad

The Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hydearbad, organised a course on EW Antenna & Radomes during 27-31 August 2001. Twenty-four participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. Shri Ram Pal, Sci G was the Course Director while Shri M Chakravarthy, Sci D was the Course Coordinator. Shri N Divakar, Director, DLRL, inaugurated the course and presided over the valedictory function and also distributed certificates to the participants. The topics covered were: electromagnetic theory and fundamentals on antennas, transmission lines and waveguides; different types of antennas, such as thin electric dipole and linear antennas, broadband frequency-independent antennas, horn, reflector and lens antennas, printed circuit antennas, satellite antennas, direction finding antennas, millimeter wave antennas, array antennas, and their applications; adaptive arrays and signal processing arrays; antenna analysis using UTD/GTD, antenna measurements, futuristic antenna technology and radomes.

HEMRL, Pune

The High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune, organised a course on High Energy Materials for the third consecutive year during 3-14 September 2001. Dr Haridwar Singh, Director, HEMRL, inaugurated the course. The course included 50 lectures covering entire spectrum of high energy materials including a lecture on advanced characterisation techniques. Thirteen new topics were covered this year. Apart from HEMRL, faculty was drawn from Pune University, NCL, C-MET, CQA (ME) and IAT. Thirty-one participants attended the course. Dr VN Krishnamurthy, Director, Pune University-DRDO/ISRO Cell was the chief guest of the valedictory function. He distributed certificates to the participants.

Dr Haridwar Singh at the inaugural sessionHEMRL conducted another course on Emerging Technologies in High Energy Materials during 15-19 October 2001. Shri MC Uttam, Dy Director, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram, inaugurated the course and Dr Haridwar Singh, Director, HEMRL, presided over the function. Twenty-seven lectures covering various emerging trends were delivered in the areas of high energy materials. Prof BSM Rao, Head, Chemistry Dept, Pune University was the chief guest of the valedictory function. Dr JP Agrawal, Associate Director, HEMRL, presided over the valedictory function.

 

INMAS, Delhi

The Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Delhi, organised a five-day course on Materials Management-An Update from 29 October to 2 November 2001. Shri Jagjit Singh, CAO was the Course Director. Twenty-five participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: communication in management, foreign payments, procurement of stores, resource generation, automation, networking, purchase procedures, decision making, audit and test audit, stress management, condemnation and plan of expenditure. Dr T Lazar Mathew, Director, INMAS, presided over the valedictory function and distributed certificates to the participants.

ITM, Mussoorie

The Institute of Technology Management (ITM), Mussoorie, organised a course on Technology Management for Naval Officers during 8-19 October 2001. Fifteen Naval Officers from various Naval commands attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: overview of technology management, technology acquisition and diffusion, project management and its techniques, technology transfer, concurrent engineering in technology development, risk management in R&D projects, make vs buy decisions, applications of software in the changing scenario, and total quality management. Col SR Damle, Offg Director, ITM, inaugurated the course. Brig (Dr) RC Pathak, Director, ITM, was the chairperson of the valedictory function.

RCI, Hyderabad

The Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, organised a course on Inertial Sensors and Systems during 8-12 October 2001. Shri KVSS Prasad Rao, CCR&D (Tech), inaugurated the course. Dr VK Saraswat, Director, RCI, delivered the keynote address on the emerging technologies in the field of inertial navigation. The topics covered during the course were: INS system-an overview, mechanical/MEMS gyros and accelerometers, laser gyros; navigation scheme; implementation, calibration and testing of INS; inertial guidance and control, and hybrid navigation. Shri SK Ray, Sci G, RCI, delivered the valedictory address while Shri P Banerjee, Dean, ELORIA, distributed the certificates to the participants.

TBRL, Chandigarh

The Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, organised a course on High Explosive Technology during 15-19 October 2001. Lectures on various aspects of High Explosive Technology were delivered by speakers from HEMRL, Pune; QAE, Bhandara and TBRL. Participants were taken round TBRL ranges and various demonstration trials were conducted.

Other Courses

DEAL, Dehradun

The Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL), Dehradun, organised a one-day Workshop on Income Tax Matters on 7 November 2001. Shri HC Pant, Chief Income Tax Commissioner, Uttranchal and his team brought awareness among participants about various matters relating to income tax.

DL, Jodhpur

The Defence Laboratory (DL), Jodhpur, organised 14th NBCD Specialisation Course on Nuclear Aspects during 8-12 October 2001 for 14 Naval Officers from NBCD School, INS, Lonavala. The course included lectures and demonstrations relating to nuclear raDIATion detection equipment and calibration techniques, modern trends in protection from effects of nuclear explosion, protection from EMP, TREE and nuclear raDIATion, biological effects and raDIATion safety.

Shri RK Syal, Director, Defence Laboratory distributed course certificates to the participants. Lt Gen Tej Paul, Chief Controller R&D (Resources), DRDO HQrs, in his valedictory address mentioned about the importance of NBC Defence in Naval ships and hoped that this training would go a long way in bringing awareness among participants about the subject. Shri PK Bhatnagar was the Course Director.

DRL, Tezpur

The Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur, organised a Training Course on Organic Composting, at Shillong during 4-6 October 2001. Forty block-level agricultural officers who participated in the course were made aware about the low cost improved composting techniques including vermi composting developed by DRL, Tezpur.
