Dr K SanthanamDr K Santhanam has taken charge as Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysore, wef 1 May 2000.

Dr Santhanam obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. After a stint in the US as a Post- Doctoral Fellow and at VP Chest Institute, University of Delhi as Reader, he joined DFRL in 1976. In 1986, he was awARDEd a Visiting Fellowship in the US for two years to investigate the biochemical mechanism of induction/prevention of a food contaminant-induced liver cancer. He served as Director, Defence Research Laboratory, Tezpur, from April 1994 to August 1996. Later, he served at DFRL as Additional/ Associate Director.

The valuable research contributions of Dr Santhanam include: understanding the biochemical mechanism underlying nutritional requirement for adaptation to high altitude stress and for accelerated healing of wounds; evaluation of dietary fibre in processed foods and ration items to formulate diets/compo-packs for maximum health benefits, biochemical demonstration of cancer preventive properties of some dietary constituents, use of commercial enzymes for food processing, induction of mobile malaria clinic in Assam: and field trial of quick test kits to detect cerebral malaria.

Shri KVS Ananda Babu, Sci F, Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore, has been awARDEd PhD for his thesis on Studies on Adaptive Estimation of Eigensubspace and Angle Tracking by Osmania University, Hyderabad.

DRDO Newsletter Correspondent Passes Away

Shri RN RaghuramanShri RN Raghuraman, Sci C, Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, and DRDO Newsletter Correspondent passed away on 17 June 2000 due to cardiac arrest at the age of 52. His untimely death is a great loss to DRDO and specially to the DRDO Newsletter family. We pray for peace of the departed soul and fortitude to the family to bear the irreparable loss.
