About Lab

The Institute was established in 26 February 1962 with the name of Institute of Work Study (IWS) at Landour, a small cantonment contiguous with Mussoorie located at an altitude of 7500 feet.

It was renamed as Defence Institute of Work Study (DIWS) in 23 February 1964 and Defence Institute of Technology Management (DITM) in 04 October 1993. DITM was re-christened as Institute of Technology Management (ITM) in 04 February 1994 with a mandate to conduct specialized courses in Technology Management and related disciplines.

The primary aim of the Institute was to train personnel of Defence Services and other Organisations in Work Study and allied subjects and offer assistance to any Organisation of Defence Ministry in the field of practical application of Work Study.

In mid 70s, new courses were introduced in the area of 'Project Management' dedicated to training of DRDO scientists. However, the main thrust of training continued to meet the training needs of Service Officers. In early 80s, the training scope was extended for training of DRDO scientists to undertake major system-development projects/programmes for Services.

By late 80s, other Defence Organisations viz: Directorate General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) etc. also started participating in specialized training at DIWS. Special courses namely R&D Management, Project Management, Technology Transfer, Financial Management in Projects, Organisational Management and Six Sigma were introduced, which were highly appreciated by the DRDO Laboratories.

Presently ITM is conducting courses in four different vertical areas. These verticals are Technology Management, Project Management, Materials Management and Organisational Behaviour & Human Resource.

The core mandate of the Institute is to organise and impart state of the art Training in areas related to Techno-managerial aspects of handling programmes and projects in the Organisation. The courses offered by the Institute are being fully utilised by DRDO, the Armed Forces and other Government Departments.
