DMRL DRDO Dr Vikas Kumar, Sc-H took over as Director, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad on August 01, 2017. He joined DMRL in 1982, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engg. from IIT, Roorkee (earlier University of Roorkee) in 1980, M. Tech from IIT, Kanpur in 1982 and Ph.D from IIT, Madras in 1995. He has been visiting scientist for two years at Centre Des Materiaux, ENSMP, Paris, France and worked under the framework of an Indo-French collaborative research program on development of advanced materials for aeroengines. He has developed expertise in the area of Fatigue & Fracture Mechanics in DMRL for more than three decades, developing several application software codes for testing and analysis. Presently, he is involved in Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue, Damage Mechanics, Life Prediction & Structure Integrity Analysis of Military Aeroengines and Weapon systems. He has made contributions to several projects in DMRL related to development of materials for aerospace, armour and naval applications. These include indigenously developed high strength and high toughness steel DMR-1700 as replacement of Maraging steel for rocket motor casing, AB grade of steels for Naval applications, Jackal and Spade armours for body and tank applications, and titanium alloys for gas turbine applications. He has also been involved in structural integrity and lifing analysis of weapon systems such as gun barrels of various origins for Indian Army. He has been also involved in development and certification of indigenously developed AB grade of steels for Indian Navy.
He has been responsible for setting up of various collaborative research programs within India with IITs and abroad such as US Air Force (AFRL), Indo-Russian and Indo-Canadian projects. He has initiated a multi-disciplinary project on “Development of Life Prediction Technologies for Aeroengine Components” for Indian Air Force (IAF). The project is envisaged to bring within DRDO an expertise in aeroengine design and lifing technologies based on the state-of-the-art Damage Tolerance and Damage Mechanics philosophies being evolved worldwide. He has established Advanced Fatigue Test Facilities for material characterization under engine simulated conditions and advanced NDE facilities for Damage Prognostics. Realising IAF’s urgent requirements, he has undertaken a multidisciplinary task of Life Extension studies of several military aeroengines owned by IAF. Among them, recent successful implementation of Life Extension programs for AI-20D aeroengines of Russian AN-32 Aircraft has been a first major joint indigenous effort by DRDO within the country for IAF.

His fundamental and applied research work has led to several Indian and International Patents, and awards such as SAIL Gold Medal, National Research and Development Corporation’s - NRDC Award, United Nation’s WIPO Gold Medal for meritorious invention, DRDO’s Technology Group award and Agni award for Excellence in Self Reliance. He has published more than 100 papers in peer reviewed National & International journals, and conference proceedings. Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) has also selected him as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is also Chairman of a Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on ‘Mechanical Testing of Materials’. He is the life member of several professional bodies such as The Institute of Engineers (India), Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ISNT).
