CFF Life Support System

• THE COMBAT FREE FALL (CFF) OXYGEN SYSTEM

The Combat Free Fall System consists of a Parachute System, Life Support System (i.e., Oxygen System, Protective clothing & equipment) and Communication System. DEBEL has indigenously developed the Life Support System for the paratroopers, which consists of Oxygen System, Pre-Breather Console and Portable Bail-Out System. The Combat Free Fall (CFF) Protective Clothing and Equipment consisting of jump suit, gloves, boots, goggles, helmet and jack-knife have been designed to meet the paratrooper’s high altitude requirement while executing the mission.

The various components and subsystems of the CFF are described as follows:

THE COMBAT FREE FALL (CFF) OXYGEN SYSTEM

ADVANCED INTEGRATED LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM

• ADVANCED INTEGRATED LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM

An advanced Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) of an aircraft essentially addresses the need for preventing in-flight Hypoxia (during high altitude flying and emergency escape) and G-Induced Loss of Consciousness (G-LOC) during high G manoeuvres. The technology consists of provisioning of breathing oxygen through On-Board Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS), a breathing regulator that supplies the breathing gas to the aircrew at desired flow and pressure, an Anti-G-Valve (AGV) that inflates the anti-G suit to apply desired counter pressure and an Electronic Controller Unit (ECU) to coordinate various functions. In addition, many other sub-systems that provide back-up /redundancy and also impart life support during emergency escape are integral part of the ILSS. All these systems are integrated in the aircraft within very limited confines of the space.


LINE REPLACEMENT UNITS OF INTEGRATED LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM IN TEJAS

ILSS consists of several sub-systems as Line Replacement Units (LRUs). These are as given below:

  • Onboard Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS)

  • Oxygen Sensor (OS)

The OBOGS produces oxygen enriched breathing gas from compressed air made available from Engine bleed air and High Power Water Extractor (HPWE). Its’ oxygen concentration is continuously analysed by an oxygen sensor (OS) and in-turn, monitored by the ECU. The breathing gas is supplied through BGMS, QDC, DOR to the pilot at the required flow & pressure. The ECU controls, monitors and coordinates the activities related to the OBOGS, BOS, OS, BGMS, DOR and also maintains a feedback with the Environmental Control Fuel Management Unit (ECFMEU) of the aircraft. The BOS provides 100% oxygen during OBOGS failure or when selected by pilot and the EOS provides oxygen during ejection. The AGV pressurizes the anti-G suit during high-g manoeuvres. The PEC interfaces the ILSS with aircrew equipment namely oxygen mask, anti-G suit and the R/T cord. QDC helps in carrying the gas supply to DOR & AGV and facilitates ejection.

DEBEL has successfully designed and developed integrated Aircrew Helmets meeting relevant MIL/DEF standards to protect the pilots against head injuries and concussions during ejection and crash landings. Until recently, all the Integrated Helmets were made aircraft-specific to match with cockpit interfaces.

DEBEL has designed and developed a Common Helmet for all the aircrafts of IAF, wherein the minimal change that is required to be carried out is the replacement of compatible earphones. These Helmets designed as per the stringent MIL and DEF standards meet all the necessary functional and safety requirements. The common Helmets are qualified for the wind blast of 600 Knots. The Helmets are made in five sizes catering to the need for meeting from 5th Percentile to 95th Percentile. They are easy to don and doff having highest degree of comfort from noise attenuation.

SYSTEM MK I

DEBEL has designed and developed Helicopter Oxygen System (HOS) Mk-I for aircrew engaged in flying Cheetah, Chetak, Cheetal helicopters in high altitude regions of Leh, Siachen and Northeast. The HOS Mk-I consist of two High Pressure Oxygen Source (HPOS), Dilution Demand Oxygen Regulator (DDOR) and connecting hoses with flow indicator and QDCs (Quick Disconnect Couplings). The HOS Mk-I is an independent system which can be fitted in above helicopters without any structural changes.

DEBEL has designed and developed Helicopter oxygen system Mk-II to meet the requirement of aircrew engaged in flying Advanced Light helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Mi-IV helicopter. The System consists of High Pressure Oxygen Source (HPOS) with various light weight composite cylinder to meet the space constraint of helicopter and its flight endurance. The system also consists of Chest Mounted Dilution Demand Breathing regulator (DDOR) Mk-I for Mi-IV and Panel Mounted Dilution Demand Oxygen Regulator (MK-II) for ALH and LCH.

DEBEL has designed and developed a oxygen system along with protective clothing and physiological health monitoring system for tandem combat free fall parachute system to provide protection to passenger and the paratrooper from hypoxia, decompression sickness and hypothermia and also to monitor their health during a jump from an altitude as high as 30,000 feet.

The Flame Retardant Aircrew Survival Jacket (FRASJ) is intended to house Personal Rescue Beacon (PRB) that activates automatically/ manually by the pilot in the event of an emergency ejection to trace the geographical location of the ejected pilot. Complete jacket is made out of FR materials and garnitures to provide sufficient escape time in the event of unforeseen crash fire.

Anti G Suit is an inflatable garment designed to enhance the +Gz tolerance of pilots of fighter aircraft. Combination of high performance materials for outer garment and bladder ensure high levels of thermal protection on exposure to high intensity heat. It is a life saving device used to save the aircrew from drowning when ejecting or para-jumping or crash landing into the sea. The item has undergone and meets stringent windblast test of 600 Knot Equivalent Air Speed (KEAS).

The Auto Inflatable Life Jacket can also be used for civil applications as in Civil Aviation and Merchant Navy.

The FR Gloves in five-finger design have been designed and developed for aircrew of fighter aircraft to provide light-weight and comfortable hand wear. The gloves provide maximum dexterity and sense of touch so that operation of aircraft controls and use of survival equipment is not affected. The gloves have been developed in two versions Mk-I and Mk-II using inherently Flame Retardant fabric.

Aircrew operating at high altitudes needs to be well protected from the adverse conditions such as low temperature and wind chill which otherwise will result in frost bite. The Gloves designed and developed by DEBEL eliminates the conventional multilayer concept to achieve insulation and uses electrically conducting active heating filaments which heat up automatically when temperature drops below +20°C and maintains the temperature within physiological comfort (22-28°C). It is equipped with rechargeable batteries and continuously variable electronic temperature controller unit which helps to regulate the temperature depending upon individual’s preferences. The batteries provide power for about 6-7 hours of continuous heating. The Gloves are available in 03 sizes.

It’s a personal protective gear specially designed for Pilots and Aircrew operating at high altitudes to provide mild heating sufficient to keep feet warm in extreme cold climate. The item is equipped with battery charger, intelligent heating system that is powered by a rechargeable battery (clipped to the shoe) and provides 6-7 hours of continuous heating. The insoles are hygienic and offer anti-slip design. The pores present in the insole aid breathing of the feet and also help in uniform heat distribution. The item is available in six sizes.

The Upgraded Cold Weather Clothing is a cold weather protective clothing intended to provide protection to aircrew positioned at high altitudes. The protective clothing is based on the multilayer concept using a combination of high performance flame retardant fibres. The thermal vest and drawers which are used in tandem with cold weather clothing is made out of fine denier polyester fibres and has been designed to provide adequate thermal insulation and comfort properties.

The FR Garter Leg Restraint has been designed and developed for pilots of HAWK AJT and Jaguar aircraft of IAF primarily to give protection to the legs of the aircrew during ejection. The Garters Leg Restraint ensure that the legs of the aircrew are drawn back and held close to the seat pan during and after ejection to avoid injuries to the limbs.

Anti-G Suit is a counter-pressure garment worn over the abdominal and lower limb portion of the body by the fighter pilot to ameliorate the ill effects of accelerative forces affecting the pilot during combat manoeuvres thus enhancing tolerance to +Gz forces. Different versions have been developed earlier with various materials and to suit different type of aircraft. The Flame Retardant Anti-G Suit Mk VI with weldable polyurethane (PU) bladder is an improvement over earlier versions and has been designed for use by aircrew flying MiG series, Mirage 2000, Jaguar, SU-30 and Hawk aircraft.

The Flame Retardant (FR) Winter Flying Jacket is a protective garment intended for aircrew operating in cold weather / high altitude conditions. The garment consists of assembly of functional fabrics for providing thermal protection, breathability and water repellency. The aircrew can use the garment alone or in conjunction with thermal vest depending upon the severity of the climatic conditions and operational requirements.

The Boot is meant for use by the aircrew and ground personnel of the IAF aircrew. It has been designed and developed to provide a durable, breathable and light weight Boot to the aircrew and is manufactured out of good quality leather with good wear comfort. The boot is provided with thick black fabric for better flexibility and side zippers are provided for easy don and doff. The Boot is capable of providing protection to the aircrew in any unforeseen fire accidents since the sole is made of Flame Retardant material.

Electrically heated blanket is an extended version of heated gloves that are made from DEBEL’s patent-pending heating Tape. Electrically Heated Blanket is developed for Soldiers and Para Military personnel operating in extreme cold environment. Unlike commercially available Heated Blankets which work on 220 VAC, the blanket developed by DEBEL works on 24 VDC and hence offers protection from electrocution should any liquid / snow/ ice fall on the surface. A multi-protection system embedded into the system will provide protection from electrocution & temperature.

HAPO Chamber is a life saving equipment for soldiers positioned at high altitudes. HAPO is a condition in which fluid accumulates in lungs causing severe illness. Rapid descent, a treatment of choice, is often not possible due to the topography, adverse weather and non availability of transport. In such a scenario portable hyperbaric chamber presents an inexhaustible light weight source of additional oxygen pressure which leads to rapid relief from symptoms of high altitude illness. The One man HAPO chamber designed by DEBEL is a portable chamber that provides emergency treatment for varying degrees of Acute Mountain Sickness including High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema. HAPO Chamber Mk I has been improved with the incorporation of lightweight Automation Unit as Mk-II version, weighing only about 8±2 kg when compared to the HAPO chamber Mk I which weighs about 36 kg. The automation unit of Mk-II version has been further miniaturized and Mk III version of automation has been developed, which can be carried around as backpack as shown above, if and when required and weighs only about 6.5 kg. The HAPO Bag has civilian application also and has been used by mountaineers in High altitude mountaineering expeditions as well as in Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, etc.

• PERSONAL COOLING SYSTEM (PCS)

Battle tank crew deployed in desert operations are subjected to extreme heat stress. The temperature inside the battle tank is reported to be 7-9 degrees higher than the prevailing ambient temperature due to reduced ventilation and radiation from metal. If the personnel have to operate wearing thermally restrictive clothing, the thermal stress will aggravate further. Mitigation of heat stress is essential to enhance mission endurance. Air conditioning of these vehicles leads to added weight and wastage of lot of energy. Therefore, cooling the personnel is the near perfect solution using microclimate cooling system which consists of an active cooling unit and a Liquid Cooled Garment.

DEBEL has developed an active cooling system based on miniature lightweight compressor that can work in an ambient of 60 Deg C. The system is lightweight & provides cooling upto 250 Watts. The system has been configured as an extremely compact backpack version.

The NBC respirator mask (Mk I) provides protection to the respiratory tract and face against chemical and biological warfare agents. It provides wide field of vision and has swivel drinking water facility that provides the means for taking liquid refreshments when the respirator is worn. The NBC Respirator Mask (Mk II) has also been developed with additional features such as provision of twin filters, electronic voice enhancer, six point harness system, drinking water pouch attachment, etc. The NBC Mask has potential for civilian application also and thus can be used by personnel working in industries, mines, fire fighting and in hospitals (against microbial protection). The Respiratory Mask was used during the SARS epidemic in the year 2003.

The Resuscitator does not require electrical power or battery. Breathing gas is supplied through air source/ bottled oxygen. Light-weight Carbon composite cylinders are used for this purpose. It has various types of alarms like low and high pressure alarms, alarms for tongue blockage and mask disconnect. It can resuscitate patient for a period of two hours.

The Single outlet resuscitator (electrical) operates with AC mains or DC 12 volts internal or external battery and bottled oxygen. It has low pressure & high pressure alarms, tongue blockage and mask disconnect alarms. Front panel has settable controls for breath per minute and minute volume. NBC canister is fitted at the inlet of compressor for supplying contaminants free breathable gas.

Integrated Hood Mask provides protection against chemical and biological warfare agents, and is specifically intended for soldiers with facial injuries, cuts, bruises, etc and soldiers with patka on their head. It consists of Respiratory Mask, Canister and the Hood.

Resuscitator is an important medical equipment used for the first aid treatment of Soldiers with respiratory failure in case of chemical warfare attack. It can also be used as a first aid equipment in operation theatres for resuscitation. It is even more useful in ambulances.

A quantitative type of tester, measures the fitment of NBC mask on human face in just 10 seconds. After the test the tester calculates fit factor based on the inward leak rate. Green or red LED indicates pass/fail status of fitment and leak factor.

The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) suit permeable Mk V is a protective garment that has been designed and developed to provide a durable, air permeable and light weight garment to the wearer. The CBRN suit can be used over suitable under-clothing depending upon climatic conditions. CBRN suit is manufactured in four sizes, Viz., Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large covering the requirements of user population. CBRN suit has been designed suitably for use with the other protective items Viz., CBRN Boot Mk II/Overboot Mk II; CBRN Respirator Mk II/Integrated Hood Mask Mk II; CBRN Gloves Mk II and Haversack Mk II.

Submarine Escape Set consists of a hydro suit and breathing apparatus (Breathing Bag). The Hydrosuit is a full coverage rubberized suit which provides protection against paralysing effects of hypothermia and reptile bites. The submarine Escape Set is a self contained closed circuit breathing apparatus used for escape from an abandoned or sunken submarine. An in indigenous Test facility for evaluation of Submarine Escape Set has also been designed and developed.

The Portable Physiological Vital Parameter Monitor is a multi-parameter monitor and is designed to serve as an ideal platform to monitor physiological parameters at the site of the casualty, or in an ambulance and also has capabilities to store the medical data, thus aiding in rapid diagnosis and logistics management.

Because of its portability it can be used as part of an emergency kit in Emergency Rooms, ICU and CCU setups. It can also be effectively used in Operation theatres, Ambulances, Mass casualty situations like accidents and natural calamities especially in remote areas and also in Old Age Homes for monitoring geriatric patients.

TELEMEDICINE SYSTEM

The portable telemedicine system is a rugged biomedical data acquisition and transmission system developed by DEBEL and is aimed at health monitoring and management of armed forces personnel especially from forward areas to military hospitals and also from ship–to–shore. The system consists of hardware to acquire vital parameters of patients such as ECG, Blood Pressure, Respiration Rate, Heart Rate, SaO2, and body temperature through the Data Acquisition System (DAS) and a military grade laptop. The salient feature of the system is its portability and flexibility to operate on various communication modalities like SATCOM, VSAT, INMARSAT, PSTN and ISDN and the video conferencing capability. In field areas the system can operate on either SATCOM or portable INMARSAT where high bandwidth facilitates real-time data transfer and video conferencing.

• REMOTE PHYSIOLOGICAL MONITORING SYSTEM (RPMS)

To provide increased situational awareness and to remotely monitor health status of the personnel, the RPMS has been designed and developed. The system can be used in areas other than field / forward areas such as oil rigs and mines. In view of the emerging trends in telemedicine activities all over the world and in India especially, the requirement for such systems exists even in rural areas. Portable systems can be set up at any remote place where establishing a permanent facility is neither feasible nor cost effective.

The Wearable SPOC system measures and monitors SpO2 (pulse oximetry) and directly controls oxygen to be supplied only when blood oxygen saturation falls below the User-defined limits. It finds applications in prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) in patrolling jawans at high altitude, as a field therapeutic device for AMS, and life support system for criticalities at remote locations.

AIR STERILIZATION UNIT (ASU)

Accumulation of microorganisms in a closed ecosystem leads to spread of infectious diseases and allergies among crew members apart from production of toxic metabolites, damage of materials and degradation of environmental hygiene. DEBEL has successfully developed air sterilization unit (ASU) for submarine application. The system works on the principle of UV irradiation and can be continuously used for 8000 h. The developed ASU is a promising system not only for use in military but also has civilian applications like hospitals and amphi-theaters The item has a shelf life 10 years and power consumption < 100 W.

• NOVEL HEMOSTATIC FORMULATION

Uncontrolled bleeding remains the leading cause of preventable death in the battlefield. As death from haemorrhage can occur within minutes of injury, prompt and effective treatment of any haemorrhage is paramount. Hemostat based on the biopolymer Chitosan with high porosity and biodegradability has been developed. Other components to enhance the haemostatic efficacy and antimicrobial activity have also been incorporated. High surface area allows for greater absorption of blood. DEBEL developed hemostat provides the soldier life-saving bleeding control in the crucial pre-hospital hour. Hemostat offers instantaneous arrest of bleeding (within 3 minutes of application), independent of natural clotting mechanism and use of blood thinners. It displays antimicrobial activity (99.99%), is light-weight, safe and has no side effects like localized heat and a shelf life of 6 months.
