PFRS became an independent entity as  Himalayan Radio Propagation Unit (HRPU) to set up communication links in the border areas and provide Frequency prediction services using data collected from propagation studies.
HRPU also collected ionospheric data from its field stations at Jammu & Tejpur .

HRPU was moved to Dehradun & temporarily located in the old barracks of IRDE.
