Dr Harsh Vardhan Batra, Scientist 'G'has been appointed Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore wef 1 May 2012. Dr Batra completed his MVSc and PhD both from Haryana University in 1977 and 1985, respectively. He worked as Head of Mycobacteriology Department in National Institute of Immunolgy, New Delhi, from 1984-1990 and joined DRDO in 1990 as Sc D in Defence Research and DevelopmentEstablishment (DRDE), Gwalior.
Dr Batra has made many technology innovations in the area of molecular biotechnology, immunoassay technology, construction of synthetic genes, andconstruction of chimeric genes/proteins. A breakthrough was achieved by him in hybridoma technology to rapidly generate specific high affinity monoclonal antibodies and has developed a number of diagnostic kits/systems for the detection of important biowarfare agents, which are extremely useful for onsite investigations of biological emergencies arising out of natural outbreaks. He has also prepared biodefence programme for the country.
Dr Batra is recipient of many awards/honours/recognitions including National Institute of Immunology Product Development Award in 1988; and DRDO Technology Cash Award in 1996 and DRDO Scientistof the Year Award in 2002. Besides, he has also been awarded for presenting Best Paper Award by a number of organizations.
He has to his credit 114 publications in national/international publications, 12 chapters in national and international books and nine patents. He has guided 25 PhD students also. Dr Batra is a life member of Indian Immunology Society; Association of Veterinary Microbiology; Immunologist and Specialist in Infectious Diseases; Veterinary Public Health Association; Indian Leptospirosis Society, and member, AFSTI.
